Counseling that Works: Intro to Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy

Our Dallas counseling therapists at Pursuit of Happiness practice a style of therapy called cognitive-behavioral.  Research has consistently shown this to be the most statistically significant in terms of making therapeutic gains in the least amount of time.

Cognitive-Behavioral teaches you to become a master of your mind, your emotions, and your reactions to the world, which can significantly change the direction of your life for the better.

Below you will find an assortment of famous researchers in the field of psychology. Their pioneering work is the foundation of Cognitive-Behavioral, which is what the best therapists practice today.

* These famous doctors are not affiliated with Pursuit of Happiness.  Their theories (minus Freud) do strongly influence the treatment available at POH Clinic.  They are our heroes, and they will be long remembered!

Albert Ellis PhD*

Described by Psychology Today (before his death) as the "greatest living psychologist," Dr. Ellis is considered to be the founder of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.  He believed that through rational analysis one can ameliorate the symptomalogy of their disorder by applying rational thought in relieving the patient of their self-defeating beliefs.  In the offending irrational thought's place, Ellis sought to replace with rational thoughts.  He believed that the truth was the most important aspect of getting people back on track to living a fulfilling life.

Carl Rogers PhD*

Dr. Rogers founded Person-Centered Therapy. His approach is based on the principle that a person cannot teach another person directly, but rather a person can merely facilitate learning.  This, of course, is an evolution of the old adage, "give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime."  Dr. Rogers believes that therapists should not be advice peddlers, but rather teach a client to enact their own change through developing one's sense of self.

B.F. Skinner PhD*

Dr. Skinner is one of the primary founders of Radical Behaviorism, and Operant Conditioning.  His theories of positive and negative reinforcement leading to the strengthening or cessation of behaviors broke new ground in the field of psychology.  The behavioral half of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is based on Dr. Skinner's idea that behavior is influenced by environmental reinforcement or consequences.

Sigmund Freud MD*

Picture
While his techniques are outdated, and his methods radical, Dr. Freud is recognized as a pioneer in the field of psychology.  The neurologist from Austria is most famous for founding Psychoanalysis, for his masterpiece of intelligentsia Civilization and its Discontents, and for getting most of Vienna hooked on cocaine, which was not known at the time to be dangerous.

Aaron Beck MD*

Picture
Dr. Beck is the modern father of Cognitive Therapy.  His theories, research, and inventories are widely used in the treatment of depression.  The Cognitive part of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is based on Beck's idea that "automatic thoughts" appearing in the mind of depressed patients is a precursor to their suffering.

Alfred Adler MD*

Picture
Dr. Adler was one of the first psychologists to recognize the importance of mental health prevention, emphasizing the need for children to be allowed a degree of freedom in decision making.  Adler was one of the first to recognize Holism, the need in therapy to take into account the entirety of a person's life to enact meaningful change.
