Holistic TherapyDr. Albert Ellis was one of the first to recognize the need for treatment of the whole human in therapy. This is the gold standard for any therapist, and for anyone in healthcare for that matter.
Successful therapy involves taking the whole person into account. This includes their mental well being, their physical well being, their psychosocial well being, and their fitness level. Mental Well Being We aren't going anywhere if we don't have control of the mind. This is the basis of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and it is the bedrock behind what a therapist is trained to do. Changing the way that we think about and perceive the world is going to cause the brain to adapt to your new-found affinity towards happiness. In response, the brain will produce neurotransmitters that are reflective of these worldviews, and you will prosper. Rinse and repeat. Physical Well Being The brain is going to have to have something to make these neurotransmitters out of. And without proper nutrition, the brain is not going to have the materials, and you will have a nice tidy worldview, but the results will be minimal. These results can be jump started with pharmacotherapy, but eventually they must come naturally. Illness and/or living an unhealthy lifestyle is going to make any gains in therapy feel very minimal. Physical Fitness If you've taken care of your mental well being and your physical well being, you now have in place the origin of right thought and the right thought materials, but your brain still needs to be able to put all this together for you. Your brain's physical fitness is going to be strongly correlated to your overall physical fitness. So exercising your body is going to strengthen your brain's capacity for building better moods as well, and scores and scores of research studies have declared exactly this. Psychosocial Interaction Humans have a basic need to feel loved and included. You cannot neglect this area of your life and live in solitude. We have an innate need for acceptance by others, and this need must be satiated. Seek out those that enjoy the same things you do, or even those that don't, but that you can still get along with and have civil discussions with. Study after study has looked at the effects of brain function while people are interacting with people they like, love, and care about and the results consistently show spikes in the neurotransmitters that make us feel good. So healthy social interaction is sort of like the spinach that turns Popeye into Super Popeye who wallops Brutus and transforms into Olive Oil's hero. If you wanna be Super Popeye, you gotta eat the spinach. And that spinach is healthy social interaction. Putting It All Together To achieve the total package, you are going to have to work for it. There is no easy way, no magic pill, no wonder-diet, no Hollywood happiness secret that is going to save you. You must learn how to train your brain to think right thought, which will give your neurotransmitters in your brain a chance to operate as they should, which in turn will give you the feeling of satisfaction that you are after. Take care of your brain, take care of your body, and take care of your life's pursuits, and you will be taken care of. |
