Personality DisordersA lot of people survey mental health criteria, find a couple items that reminds them of themselves, and self diagnose themselves with a disorder. This is most common in the Personality Disorder spectrum.
Please be reminded that in the case of legitimate psychological disorders, there must co-occur a significant disruption in life functioning in some way. For example, you are losing your job or relationships are going to pot because of what is going on with you psychologically. If this is the case, you may have a Personality Disorder. These can be helped. While rarely diagnosed, personality disorders can co-occur in upwards of 60% of psychiatric patients. These traits are often "ego-syntonic", in other words, are maladaptive traits that have developed, but which the individual feels is part of their normal personality. Because of this, we rarely see people seeking help for personality disorders, and when we do, they can be difficult to resolve. If you find that people do not like to be around you, your friends stop hanging around you, or you aren't getting invited to your family Thanksgiving anymore, it may be time to take a look in the mirror and do some self-evaluation. Pursuit of Happiness counselors come well equipped to do battle with even the most inflexible of personalities. And ten points for whoever can guess the strange fellow to the left! |
