Psychodynamic Theory of CounselingSigmund Freud is a legend of psychology. His theories rocked the world when they were introduced. They were the talk of the town. People had never considered concepts like the subconscious, or how their dreams could be interpreted, or the depth of the effects of childhood. They also didn't know, unfortunately, how dangerous cocaine was. Thus, half of Vienna was soon hooked!
While nobody can say that the Psychodynamic approach to therapy doesn't work, what we can say is that it does not appear to work in a timely manner. The research seems to indicate that this type of therapy, in some instances, take years to begin to take affect. It is also noted in the research that simply letting time pass also seems to work as well. This modality of therapy attempts to find a deeper meaning in the world with respect to how you interpret the world. And through this meaning you will find that there will be facets of your life which seem to mirror the ways that you view the world. For instance, Freud hypothesized that young children, who were not potty trained properly, later on in life had a problem with making sure they controlled every aspect of everything they were doing. Thus, the term "anal retentive" came to be. Freud also hypothesized that we are born evil, and through being taught and shown love we are molded into something better. This, he says, is why newborn babies cry incessantly on every whim. According to Freud, a newborn feels that their desires must be satiated immediately, and are thrown into fits of mad anger when not immediately satisfied. This philosophy is a mirror of many religious doctrines that suggest that indulgence is the shadow of evil. Today, the field of psychology looks upon Freud's memory and theories as little more than an important first step to give rise to the science of psychology that we see today. It got people interested in the field, and in the notion that people who were having mental health problems could use psychotherapy to free themselves of their suffering. |
