On Thursday, regulators approved the use of the drug Abilify as an injectable treatment for schizophrenia. Over the summer this request had been denied because of deficiencies in a third party supply of sterile water, but the drug maker cleaned up the shortcomings and resubmitted.
For those schizophrenics that show efficacy with the treatment of Abilify, having the option of receiving it in injectable form will be a boon for them. Schizophrenics, bless their hearts, are not the most reliable population and will often forget their appointments and forget to take their medications. One of the hallmarks of this debilitating disorder is poor hygiene, which goes hand in hand with being able enough to take medication as prescribed.
With an injectable, they can be injected only once a month, and then not have to worry about much else besides coming in for their injections. This is great for them because when schizophrenics begin to go off the rails and stop taking their medication, their condition will usually deteriorate commiserate with their ability to function, and then they wind up in the psychiatric hospital, which is not where we want them to be.
So three cheers for injectable Abilify for schizophrenics!
